Shrimp gaetano is to die for, best bruschetta ever, red sauce smooth and tasty, pizza very good crust & toppings. Must try! Went August 2015.

This has been a long time favorite of ours for Italian food in Fort Collins, but after a very disappointing visit on 6/10/15, it is unlikely that we will be back. The first clue that something had changed was that the peace was nearly empty. This was really unusual since Caninos was usually (in past years) very crowded. We soon found out why. The "flash" fried calamari was so deep fried it was hard crunchy bits. The cheese sticks were no better than frozen from King Soopers. We left most of both of these, but we were not asked if there was anything wrong. I had the shrimp scampi, and while the shrimp were delicious, the sauce was completely tasteless. Our friends did not finish their choices either. For a party of six, we had a bill of $184 and a very bad taste in our mouth.

I like the old house, and authentic Italian home like environment. Nice people, and good service. The vegetable spinach lasagne, and chicken marsala were both delicious.

Went for a lovely dinner with my grandpa and boyfriend to this place and I would love to go again on Valentines day or a romantic dinner. The atmosphere is homey yet fancy since its in a old restored house and the decorations give an authentic air. We always go in the middle of dinner rush and have never waited. The food and drinks where fantastic and our waiter was a really nice guy. The only thing is the restaurant is so two floors and so many rooms occasionally the service is a little slow but everything else makes up for it.

Delicious! You get a soup and salad with an entree.

The first time we went here it was pretty freaking good, but the second time around was not so great. The appetizers were great, but the main dishes were both nasty nasty. Cold in the center, or dry, they weren't good and we spent $60+ for dinner to leave unsatisfied. We might go back, but very hesitant.

I've lived in FoCo since the late 90s and had never made it in to Canino's. Then my husband was recently given a gift certificate so it was time to give it a try. We called on a mid Saturday afternoon in December to get a reservation for our family of five. We were offered two choices: 5:00 or 7:30 because they were already pretty booked. We chose the 5:00, not minding the early dinner time. We arrived at 4:50, the restaurant was completely empty and when we were greeted, the first thing the host said was "Did they tell you we're really booked tonight and your table has another reservation at 6:30, so will you be able to finish by then??" This comment was delivered in a very off-putting and unwelcoming way. After being shown upstairs and seated in the empty room I started to have second thoughts.... who wants to be pushed out the door? So before we proceeded to order drinks I verified that they would have time to serve us without us being rushed. We ended up staying but that definitely left a bad first impression. As for the food..... The vegetable minestrone was gross. We were warned that it is their special recipe and not your typical minestrone. It's a beef base with no beans. We decided to have it anyway. When it arrived, it was essentially strong/overly salty beef broth with a few overcooked slices of zucchini or yellow squash. I didn't bother to have more than a few sips. The salad was unmemorable. My daughter and I split a Pizza Bianca and a chicken on bruchetta dish (sorry; can't remember the exact name). Decent but unremarkable. I've tasted better white pizzas. Bottom line: Fort Collins has so many better choices of restaurants I can't see spending my dining out dollars here when the food is mediocre at best and the service is poor. I wanted to like this place, but it just didn't happen. My kids were happier with Canino's than my husband and I were, but unless they're paying, we won't be back!

The worst service ever. We literally had to get our own water. Then they closed the restaurant, putting the chairs on the other tables around us. We called the manager the next day to complain and she didn't care! I don't know why they are still open - the food was also terrible - the chicken parmigiana wasn't breaded and in a small dish with high sides, making it very difficult to eat. Fort Collins is limited for good Italian food. Bisetti's is our usual go-to.

We would never eat here again. I went there with my husband on a date night and he couldn't even eat his meal. He ordered a chicken dish that was so sweet he couldn't eat it. We got an appetizer and a salad and a dinner and everything was very basic boring and not very tasty. I'm not an amazing cook but I'd much rather eat at home. I think this is the worst restaurant in Fort Collins.

Used a restaurant.com coupon. Got 50$ worth of food for 25$. Food was amazing and I can't believe how much you got. We had the family platter and I was eating for days. From the noodles to the sauce everything was A+. Staff was polite and professional. Cool place too not a modern/Olive Garden lookin place. Look no farther for a great place to take a date. Will go back soon thanks Canino's

Italian food isn't the first thing that comes to mind when my family is either really hungry, or feeling like a splurge. It's just not our favorite. But when done right, it can be really great. Too bad this place didn't really do it right--at least not for us. I'm giving it two stars because Yelp's two-star descriptor, "Meh, I've experienced better," is a perfect description of our experience there. We (my wife and I) had a restaurant.com coupon to use, so we decided to try this place (we'd never been there before). The restaurant is located in a nice old residence, so while unique, I guess it depends on where you're seated as to whether or not that's a good thing. For us it wasn't. We were seated upstairs in front of a nice big window facing College Ave. But it wasn't a very big room (four 4-tops). And another table with two couples seated there spoke and laughed so loud you could hear them downstairs. We heard everything about all their lavish travels and important people they hobnobbed with, but we could barely hear each other talk at our own table. Our waiter wasn't all that friendly or informative or speedy either. He gave us our menus and didn't come back for at least ten minutes (and they weren't all that busy either). He never asked us any questions other than what we wanted. Our food was slow to arrive, and he never once checked back after bringing any of the three courses (soup, salad, and entree) to ask if everything was okay. He never offered to refill our water or my wife's glass of wine. He didn't offer dessert either. From the time we were seated to the time we were served our entrees was just a couple minutes shy of an hour. The food was just okay. My wife had the chicken genovese. She said it was just okay and that the pieces of chicken were somewhat bland and needed seasoning. I had the veal saltimbocca with gnocchi, instead of pasta, as the side dish. The veal was just okay, but the portions looked kind of sad. Served on a large plate were eight or nine tiny (think the size of your pinky), rolled-up, veal cutlets with no sauce or juice at all except what miniscule bit came from the meat after being cooked. And the gnocchi was kind of gummy too; it could have been much better. All around, and for the price, not even average. It was a good thing we had the coupon, or else we'd have been really disappointed to drop $50+ on that meal. We might try it again sometime and order something different.

Heard from locals that this was the place to go to scratch my east coast italian food itch. They were right. Understated decor adds to the homey ambiance. Service was attentive and friendly. I ordered the lasagna and was pleasantly surprised. A nice size portion for the money, it was obviously homemade. A truly enjoyable experience...I look forward to returning.

The family and I decided to give this a try since we were new to the area. We went on retro night (by chance!) so obviously i was impressed with the price! Lol! Well, our wait was a little longer than the quoted 45 minutes we were expecting. I kind of felt like they were being a little picky where we would be placed because, we have two small toddlers. (they really aren't bad kids at all!) i noticed a lot of smaller and bigger groups going in before us.... I got the sampler to get a feel for the place. I was hoping maybe if we tried it and liked it... We would come back and try the options that weren't on the retro list... I wasn't very impressed. I'm italian and i know good food when i eat it! Just wasn't anything special and I am glad we didn't have to pay full price. Its not very authentic when your cooks are loud obnoxious CSU students (not all students are!!!)

Pros: Nice atmosphere, good menu, nice hostess Cons: Waitress seemed reluctant to communicate with us, no acknowledgment when we spoke to her, even to compliment the food, felt like she was ready for us to leave before we were halfway through the meal. Table with a large party near us had a waitress discussing desserts and after-dinner coffees, ours walked up with the bill in her hand and asked if we wanted anything else, no offer of a dessert menu....she was definitely wrapping the evening up for us. Well, by all means, if you don't want us to spend any more money in there we won't bother you with that. This was a birthday dinner and I felt like I'd been an irritation. We were comped for the appetizer we'd ordered (found a hair woven into the food) but we just brought it to her attention, we didn't get angry or demand anything for free, so maybe she was uncomfortable dealing with us? Maybe she was having a terrible day? I'd actually go back and give them another shot because one staff member doesn't need to ruin an entire restaurant for us, and the food was good, but I'm pretty bummed I chose it for an occasion. The underwhelming and unfriendly service dominated what I was hoping would be a fun and relaxing birthday dinner.

As far as the atmosphere goes..it's cozy and very nice. I LOVE that it's an old house. As far as the food goes, what we ordered was not impressive. My boyfriend got the vegetarian sampler and I got the Canino's pizza. The pizza was decent, tasted like a pizza I could have ordered from a fast food place. The Sampler was bland and the noodles were mushy. Definitely not "Al Dente". The food just didn't live up to the building and atmosphere!

I have been coming here for a little more than thirty years, and have yet to be disappointed. On my last visit, arrived during a rush, and agreed to wait 45 minutes for a table. While waiting on the front lawn with others, the hostess brought my little girls drinks and and some candy to hold them over, when we did make it to our table, it was more than worth the wait - fantastic! I only wish the Downtown Fort Collins airport was still open so I could come more often. Easily, some of the best, most authentic Italian food to be found on the front range.

Canino's is in one of those locations in town when you drive by you think 'Oh yeah! I keep forgetting to try that place!' It is in what I consider a very inconspicuous spot. That isn't necessarily to it's detriment though. This offers a nice peaceful atmosphere for those who do go and dine here. I finally got the chance to go here the other night which I am so glad I did! The building where Canino's is housed is what looks like to have been a private home at one point and time which makes sense with it's discreet location. I ordered the eggplant parmigiana with pasta. I also had salad and soup to pick from as well. I got a salad with raspberry vinaigrette and for soup I originally ordered a creamy potato dill soup but unfortunately they were out so I went with the creamy mushroom soup. The salad and soup were awesome and since eggplant parmigiana is one of my favorite it was an immediate shoo in on favor-ability for me. For dessert I had strawberry gelato which was light and not too rich which was just what I needed! Definitely a worthy independently owned Italian restaurant to go to if you want to avoid the conventional and mediocre restaurant chains here in town.

Was looking for a place to chow down after a day of beer hopping in Ft. Collins. We went here on a whim and were blown away. The ambiance was perfect for what it is. A homemade Italian smorgasbord. The food was authentic Italian. The dinners come with soup and salad. The soup was obviously made on site. The bruschetta was perfect. We both ordered lasagna and if was awesome. It tasted like somebody's Italian grandmother was in the back making it. We couldn't finish our entrees as we were heading out of town and couldn't take a togo box. The service was excellent and we were given cookies to take with us instead. Would definitely go back if I'm ever in town again.

I did not have to pleasure of sitting down for dinner at this clearly authentic italian gem of a restaurant. However, I did have an oppurtunity to see what excellent service this place offers. My father had been craving cannoli since the beginning of our road trip 4 days prior. We had tried just about every Italian restaurant on our way and not one offered a cannoli that wasnt some prepackaged crap. We finally found this place and got two to go, and they were great, though they weren't the most traditional (i.e. Chocolate chips). What impressed me most about this place was the OUTSTANDING service we got from the young man we ordered with. I sort of asked him in passing where I could find some locally made cheese and he pulled out a phone book and made several calls to local businesses until he found me what i was looking for. Talk about above and beyond!

Absolutely love this place...the food has always been top notch, never had a problem with service and i like the fact it's in an old house. Just adds to the feel of it all. The large order of Sicilian style garlic bread is big enough to be its own meal and is delicious. The herb crusted chicken and pork are both good, with servings a little smaller than I'd expect. The Minestrone soup is great and my friend said the curry salad was pretty good. Just remember one thing...when you go here, a large order is just that...LARGE.

Was walking around town and thought I'd give it a try. It has a variety of pastas and a good seafood selection Decided on a Great rib eye steak though. My friend had the ciopini. The meal also came with soups and salads. Both meals were very good (though I've had better onion soups). We brought our own wine and corkage was only 8 bucks. Wine list looked pretty good though.

So when I read these reviews I honestly didn't realize that you could order something other than a Canino here, (I think that's what they're called). They're basically like stromboli's but here they're a little more decadent and cheesy. I'm going with three stars because the service here was always really lacking. This was several years ago, but we always waited and waited for recognition, drinks, refills, etc. However, their sandwich things are delicious, really filling, and we had access to some coupons I think so they were really affordable.

Some families are food-centric. Every get together is a celebration with a feast where nobody is left hungry. There is often laughter with every bite, smiles all around and happiness with every helping. Recipes are passed down from generation to generation and children learn traditions in the kitchen from an early age. The food may sometimes be adequate and nothing gourmet, but it fills hearts with jubilation. Italian families are often most famous for this type of life-style. This is exactly the feeling I get when dining at Canino's Italian Restaurant. Canino's is a pretty decent Italian restaurant - not the most snazzy, but not bad at all. A unique atmosphere, nourishing food reminiscent of family evenings and like their slogan says - a restaurant for Italians and anyone who enjoys eating like an Italian.

Delicious! A Monday night so not crowded at all, attentive server, thanks Ryan and loved the Calamari Natale. Have never had stuffed calamari, so good and the fettuccine side was plentiful. You could tell the soups were homemade, the crusty warm rolls hit the spot. My table mates seemed equally pleased with their meals. Tasty Italian meal!

I was torn between giving Canino's two stars or three. There is no option for a half star, or else it would've been 2.5. The extra half would have gone to the fact that our server seemed to be very enthusiastic about the food she serves. That's always nice to see. The best part about my dining experience here was the company. Good conversation makes everything taste better. That, and a bottle of wine. The atmosphere was nice, too, actually. Very cozy and old-timey, but not smelly. Sometimes, old buildings smell of funk and oldness, damp and musty--like an old trunk in a humid attic. Canino's smelled of old-school American-Italian food, which is not a bad smell. My friend ordered the Scampi Gaetano, and I ordered the Shrimp D'Bianco. Both meals came with soup, salad, and a roll. The roll was warm and soft. I had the minestrone soup, which was obviously homemade. The ground meat in it was super peppery, and the veggies tasted kind of pickled, but it wasn't bad. My friend didn't get soup. I got the balsamic vinaigrette with my salad. It was a pretty nice salad. It came with chickpeas on top and there was a slice of provolone and salami tucked into the bottom. Their dressings are house-made, which is always a nice touch. I subbed angel hair for the fettucini that came with my dish because I'm not a huge fan of big mouthfuls of thick, mushy pasta. I assumed that the pasta was going to be parboiled and then finished to order. I'm pretty sure I was correct. For some reason, when angel hair is mushy (and it was) it doesn't bother me as much. Maybe because it is so thin that I don't even have to pretend to chew it. My dish was edible. I once had a sample of microwavable shrimp scampi (that's what it said on the box) from Costco, and that's what my dish tasted like. I liked how thin their angel hair was, though. It looked pretty. The tomatoes in it were not ripe and had the peculiar texture of being mealy and chewy at the same time from, I assume, improper storage in a fridge. My friend's Gaetano was oddly cheesy, like mac and cheese, but with angel hair pasta. We had a pleasant enough time, but as we were walking to our cars, my companion said, "Well, that was my last experience eating there."

The fresh hand-made pasta is very good-- you can definitely taste the difference. However, the sauce was incredibly bland. The bread is also pretty subpar for an Italian place. I'm pretty sure I had a salad and soup too, but they apparently weren't memorable. The ambience was unique for Fort Collins. It's in an old house and decorated with wallpaper. Reminded me of some French places I've been to.

This place totally took me by surprise and wasn't at all what I expected, and this is a good thing! I went there for a bachelorette dinner where the hostess for our party wanted to eat at an authentic Italian restaurant since the bride-to-be was Italian. Even though we were there for a late dinner, they were very nice and accommodating to us. We all got started off with some homemade roll which were AMAZING! Light, fluffy, and flavorful, they actually give my mom's rolls a run for their money! All of our dinners also came with soup and salad, and everyone really enjoyed the homemade soups. All of the menu items sounded delicious, it made it so hard to decide what to get. I ended up going with the Chicken Bruchetta since it was the first thing I saw and sounded great. And boy was it! On top of two delicious pieces of garlic bread was the biggest chicken breast I had ever seen, all topped with a tomatoes, roasted red peppers, basil, and cream sauce. It was sooooo good! It was so large, I was sad that I could only eat half (my husband ate the other half for lunch the next day and he also loved it!). Everyone else also loved their meals! And even though their entrees are a bit more than at other restaurants, once you add in the soup and salad that are included with the meal, it is a great deal! I also can't help but mention the unique location in an old, refurbished house. It actually makes you feel like you are eating at someone's home. It definitely gives a nice ambiance for a special night out. Though I would have to say that they need to refurbish their bathrooms which are a little interesting with doors that don't really close. Overall, great food at a unique location definitely worthy of a nice night out!

so first of all, i might be a little biased, as boyfriend and i had our first date here. anyways! it's a small italian place, on the more expensive side of moderate, but for pretty good food. i haven't had anything that totally blew my mind, but the few times we've been here, i've always enjoyed what i eat. the bread they serve totally rocks, and the soup and salads are also up there (they hide bits of salami and provolone underneath all of the greens, and the french onion soup is just cheesy enough, which is way cheesy). i like the patio, i like the decor, and most of all i like that they have a jar of jordan almonds up front, as my favorite childhood memories of eating italian also involve a selection of candy at the cash register. in conclusion, i like the food, but i love every other part of the experience, mainly things involving jordan almonds and cheese.

This is by far the best Italian food I've had in Fort Collins, probably in all of Colorado. Every bit of my husband's and my meal was absolutely amazing and dessert was very good as well. As an Italian food connoisseur, I will definitely be back!

While visiting my in-laws in Fort Collins, they wanted to take us out to their favorite Italian restaurant - Canino's. Let me start off by saying that Canino's has been around since the mid-1970's and is located essentially in downtown Ft. Collins in a semi-large old house. The architecture is interesting and quaint and could have distracted me all night (I'm a sucker for old houses). We were promptly seated and received patient but timely service from the staff. Of course bread was served promptly while we were deciding on what to choose for our meals. My wife ordered eggplant lasagne and I ordered the veal marsala. All dinners came with both choice of soup (French onion for me, minestrone for my wife) and salad AND a side of pasta in most cases. Since my in-laws are already fans of the place, I won't go into their food or opinoins. As newcomers, my wife and I were pleased with the food. The dinner portions were certainly plentiful. We ended up having to leave half-way through our meal due to our extremely tired child (she had basic penne pasta with alfredo sauce, which I believe they call Gaetano). The wait staff were certainly understanding and accomodating. Even taking the food home and reheating, it was still good! The veal marasala had a nice sauce with it that had a sweetness (undoubtedly from the wine) and fresh mushrooms. The veal could have been just a tad bit more tender, but this was a minor flaw in my estimation - it was still very good. Oh, and they do offer pizzas - definitely for eat-in or take-out and they may also deliver (not sure about that). The are open for a few hours over lunchtime, then they close and reopen for dinner at 5 PM. Overall, I give Canino's 4/5 stars. Very good food and service. I've had better (see Garozzo's in Kansas City or Rosebud's in Chicago) but not many. We would definitely come back.

I hadn't been to Canino's in years, and went there about a month ago for dinner with my boyfriend. Although the place was nearly empty, it took almost 10 minutes before a hostess seated us. I ordered the minestrone, which was incredibly vinegar-y. My entree was good, but not fantastic. Unlike some other reviewers, I was not dazzled by the bread. All in all a mediocre experience. There's better Italian in Fort Collins!

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.
